Glossary-2012 (and prior years) SAT Report

This glossary defines key terms for the school, district, county, and state level records. These definitions are applicable to the 2011-12 reports as well as prior year reports.

The terms described below are listed in the order in which they appear in the headings.

Background

This document is meant to accompany the SAT Report. The California Department of Education (CDE) receives SAT data at the student level from the College Board. The CDE then aggregates the data by school, district, county, and state in order to produce the SAT Report. The SAT Report includes only California public schools with one or more students enrolled in grade twelve according to data submitted by local educational agencies (LEAs) and maintained in the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS). Scores for schools that had fewer than eleven students taking the SAT are not shown on the SAT Report in order to preserve the anonymity of the students.

SAT Report

Grade 12 Enrollment

The number of students reported as enrolled in grade 12. Data reported to CBEDS by LEAs (as of October).

Numberr Tested

The number of students for whom the College Board reported SAT data. College Board and CDE public school data. (Note: SAT records are linked to schools based on a secondary school code recorded by the student on the SAT test.)

Percent Tested

“Number Tested” divided by “Grade 12 Enrollment.” Calculated element. (Note: Because data for Grade 12 Enrollment and Number Tested are compiled at different points in time, these numbers may be valid even when the percent tested exceeds 100 percent. In other cases, source data may be in error.)

Critical Reading Average (formerly titled “Verbal Average”)

The average critical reading SAT score is calculated based on the sum of students’ critical reading SAT scores at the school, district, county, or state level divided by the “Number Tested” (at each level). Calculated element using critical reading SAT scores reported by the College Board

Math Average

The average math SAT score is calculated based on the sum of students’ math SAT scores at the school, district, county, or state level divided by the “Number Tested” (at each level). Calculated element using math SAT scores reported by the College Board

Writing Average (2005–06 and after)

The average writing SAT score is calculated based on the sum of students’ writing SAT scores at the school, district, county, or state level divided by the number of students tested (at each level). Calculated element using writing SAT scores reported by the College Board

Total >= 1,500 Number (Prior to 2005–06, Total >= 1,000 Number)

The number of students at each level (school, district, county, and state) with total SAT scores (critical reading, math, and writing scores combined) that met or exceeded 1,500. (Note: Prior to 2005–06, “Total >= 1,000 Number” was based on combined verbal and math scores.) Calculated Element.

Total>=1,500 Percent

Beginning in 2007–08, the percent was calculated by dividing the “Total >= 1,500 Number” by the “Number Tested.” Calculated Element.

Total >= 1,500 Rate (Total >= 1,000 prior to 2005-06)

In 2006–07 and 2005–06, the rate was calculated by dividing the “Total >= 1,500 Number” by the “Grade 12 Enrollment.”

Prior to 2005–06, the rate was calculated by dividing the “Total >= 1,000 Number” by the “Grade 12 Enrollment.” Calculated Element.
