Glossary-2012 (and prior years) AP Report
This glossary defines key terms for the school, district, county, and state level records. These definitions are applicable to the 2011-12 reports as well as prior year reports. The terms described below are listed in the order in which they appear in the headings.
Background
This document is meant to accompany the AP Exam Results Report (AP Report). The California Department of Education (CDE) receives AP data at the school level from the College Board. The CDE merges the AP data with the CDE school level data for students in grades eleven and twelve. These data are then aggregated to the district, county and state levels. The AP Report includes only California public schools that had one or more students enrolled in grade eleven and/or grade twelve according to data submitted by local educational agencies (LEAs) and maintained in the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS). The AP Report focuses on all AP exams taken at a particular school, without regard to the subject area. Because students may take multiple AP exams, the combined number of exams with scores 1 through 5 (shown in the last five columns of the report) may not equal the number of exam takers. Because this report is generated from school level data, percentages pertaining to students, including average scores, cannot be calculated. The number of exams by score received is not shown for schools that had fewer than eleven students taking AP exams in order to preserve the anonymity of the students.
